The 1746 Battle of Culloden, between the French-supported Jacobites and the Hanoverian British Government, was the last battle ever to be fought on British soil.
Barker Langham was asked to help create a new visitor centre, while simultaneously restoring and re-interpreting the iconic battlefield. We contributed to the business plan that secured key funds, then turned to setting up the curatorial and academic teams and developing a design brief.
The new visitor centre won first prize for its use of technology in the 2008 Museums and Heritage Show Awards, and in 2009 was named one of the top five tourist attractions in Scotland (Visit Scotland).
“The Highlands, with its rich history, beautiful scenery and variety of things to see and do, is already a must-see destination,” says Peter Lederer, chairman of Visit Scotland, “but the new centre enhances the visitor experience further. This is indeed a site which boasts quality throughout.”
