John Thompson – Associate Director
John’s experience includes 30 years as researcher, curator and director, working in university and local authority museums and galleries. During this time he carried through major reorganisations and development plans for museums and galleries in Bradford and Tyne and Wear and played a formative role in establishing the national standards for museums in ethics, accreditation and collections management. He was chairman of the editorial board for the Museum Association’s ‘Manual of Curatorship’ – the first single volume reference work on museum practice and an international best seller in its day. Since 1990 he has worked as a consultant and advisor in cultural heritage organisation and management, education and training, both in the UK and internationally, for many clients including the Heritage Lottery Fund, Unesco, Prince Research Consultants and Educational Developments International. He is a professional reviewer and mentor for candidates preparing for the AMA (Associate of the Museums Association) and his committee work includes:- ‘Buttress’, the Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust, the Friends of Bede’s World, Jarrow, and the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead. John is a Fellow of the Museums Association.
