Berwick is one of the world’s most important walled towns, home to Hawksmoor’s Berwick Barracks and 300 objects of the world famous Burrell Collection, currently held in the local museum and art gallery. Barker Langham worked closely with key stakeholders and the public to develop a coordinated vision for the future of culture in this northern town.
We established a steering group to debate this issue with both local and regional representatives, the subsequent consultation revealing a real sense of pride in a museum that was faced with closure.
The vision statement created was underpinned by our proposals to give a new lease of life to the Barracks, with a revitalised museum at its heart. Our work was fully endorsed by the Council, and led to a multi agency group being created to develop the Museum and Barracks in tandem in the long term.
