Victoria Park was London’s first public park and has provided a vital green space for the East End ever since it was created in 1842. Barker Langham has been a key part of the park’s recent restoration, taking a lead role in the visioning, business and cultural planning. In addition, we developed key documents for the Heritage Lottery Fund, which awarded £4.5 million to the project.

We also created an interpretation plan for the park that reveals the history of the park using arts, media, exhibition and new programmes. We undertook a detailed audience assessment and created an innovative multi-media trail to encourage people to explore the park and its stories in a different way. Barker Langham also defined the business case to develop an Eastern Hub building, which will provide a new heart to the park with facilities such as exhibition, café and community spaces.

Our approach has been to engage local organisations in the development of the plans to ensure a strong local ownership, and also to support Council employees with our expertise in consultation and project development. In addition, we are monitoring the project through qualitative and quantative data collections so that the social and economic impact of the project can be measured.
