The 1746 Battle of Culloden, between the French-supported Jacobites and the Hanoverian British Government, was the last battle ever to be fought on British soil. Barker Langham was asked to help create a new visitor centre, whilst simultaneously restoring and re-interpreting the iconic battlefield.

We assisted the client in securing key funds for the project from the European Union and also produced the research to support the business plan for the project. Our core work established the curatorial and academic teams essential to create an inspiring design brief for the interpretation. This role included managing the content research for the project, commissioning specialist research, convening workshops of key academics and consulting with an Advisory Panel. This work underpinned the success of the project, both in terms of creating a compelling and accurate narrative and a world-class visitor experience.

The new visitor centre opened in time for the 2008 Highland Year of Culture. It won First Prize for Use of Technology in the Museums and Heritage Show Awards 2008 and was one of Visit Scotland’s Top Five Tourist Attractions in Scotland in 2009.
