The Phoenix is an independent cinema that is uniquely operated by a charitable trust on behalf of the people of North London. Barker Langham were commissioned to carry out public consultation work within the local community to gain a deeper understanding of audience needs. This would then underpin the Phoenix Cinema Trust’s proposals for heritage and learning activities, which would be part of their wider building restoration plans.

We surveyed 29 groups by telephone, before organising two focus group sessions to allow stakeholders to visit the cinema and discuss the planned activities. Engaging local participants in future plans was vital, as the cinema is very much seen as a community resource.

The findings were collated and analysed by Barker Langham and then incorporated into the Trust’s Heritage Lottery Fund’s application, which was successful in winning £600,000.
