Following work with the Battle of Prestonpans Heritage Trust to help promote their vision and develop funding, Barker Langham have now sponsored the major community arts project, The Prestonpans Tapestry. The Tapestry charts Bonnie Prince Charlie’s journey from South Uist to the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745. It is made up of 103 panels created by 200 volunteers from around the world, who followed a design by artist Andrew Crummy, who was born in Prestonpans.

From July 2010 the Tapestry has toured Scotland in the footsteps of the Jacobite army of 1745, visiting communities involved in the creation of the Tapestry and associated with events in its story. For further information and upcoming dates on the tour please visit the Prestonpans Tapestry website, where you can also find images of the whole Tapestry.

Barker Langham are proud to sponsor this important celebration of Scottish culture and history.

Barker Langham recently put a call out for London based professional photographers to submit a proposal for a photographers in residence commission at Victoria Park, via the Four Corners and Chisenhale Art Gallery. We received 15 very high quality submissions and after interviewing the shortlist have commissioned locally based Toby Smith to carry out a commission for Photographer in Residence & Photographic workshops at Victoria Park, to take place during August and September this year.

Darren Barker said ‘We were overwhelmed with the quality of the submissions we received and we are pleased to offer the commission to Toby Smith, a locally based photographer who has a really fresh and vibrant portfolio. We hope local people will enjoy taking part in the project and enjoy the pictures!”

Toby Smith, 28, is a Landscape and Reportage Photographer specializing in the dynamic relationship between human architecture and natural environment. Toby graduated from London College of Communication in 2008 with an MA in Photography and now works from his studio base in E14, London. His latest body of work includes, ‘The Renewables Project’, which focuses on the hydroelectric industry in Scotland and is on show at theprintspace gallery from 20th August to 1st September (94 Kingsland Road, 9am – 7pm Monday – Friday).

Toby Smith is based locally and is very excited about the commission “It’s a great opportunity to undertake a photographic project in a location which I know so well as I have been cycling though the park to my studio for years. It’s an exciting time for the park as it is just about to undergo dramatic change as restoration works start later in the year. Parks to me are about landscapes and their relationship with the people which inhabit them – I hope my body of work & the workshop participants will create an engaging collection of images which can mark an important point in the park’s history.”

Toby proposes to spend a full 7 day week in the park across a number of calendar months, Monday through Sunday, to explore, photograph and capture the people and activities of Victoria Park. He proposes the project will contribute to an understanding of the park’s ‘human’ usage but also feed into an historical archive. The approach, although contemporary in background, will be documentary in style and true to the people he encounters.

Engagement with the different users of the park through participatory workshops forms another essential part of the project and Toby will be facilitating park-users to engage and capture their environment. Technical and creative tips will be offered ahead of an afternoon of photography. Attendees will have the opportunity to download their images and contribute to the Photographic Archive Project – www.flickr.com/groups/thepeoplespark before their work is displayed in the new Eastern Hub Building which will be due to open in late 2011.

Workshops will be taking place on August 26th – 28th, and September 10th. For further information or to book a place please contact Dave Hime on 020 8533 2057, or email dave.hime@towerhamlets.gov.uk

Victoria Park has long been known as The People’s Park. Over 30,000 East End residents signed a petition to the Queen in 1840 to have a park built in this densely populated area of London, and when construction was delayed local people simply began using the space before it could be officially opened. Soon Victoria Park became famous as a site of free speech and protest, echoed in the Rock Against Racism gig held in 1978.

Today Victoria Park has received £4.5 million through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund’s (BIG) Parks for People programme. Coupled with funding from Tower Hamlets council this means £12 million will be spent on improving the park ahead of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Alongside the improvements this will bring to the physical fabric of the site, we want to collect your memories of Victoria Park in the form of photographs, old and new.

To have your images scanned and included in an online archive simply come along with your photos to one of our events in the Park on 15th August, 11th September and 10th October. Barker Langham will be setting up near the Pavilion Cafe. Alternatively, upload your digital images to our Flickr site at www.flickr.com/groups/thepeoplespark

The new visitor centre was opened today at Sconce and Devon Park in Newark. The new centre was part of a restoration project to promote the historic Sconce, the best preserved earthwork fort in Europe, and to improve facilities at this important park that attracts over 200,000 users per year. Barker Langham were instrumental in assisting the Council team in planning and delivering the audience and interpretation elements of the scheme. This included creating a volunteering plan; community consultation; creating a new event for the park; producing a new guide book, and all the on site signage and interpretation panels. Representatives from the HLF and Big Lottery praised the scheme.

Interviewing local residents and historians and undertaking archival research has uncovered a wealth of information on East London history. From Debden in the North to the banks of the Thames, the Audio Trail will link together for the first time the intriguing heritage of the River Roding.
