We’re no stranger to the Middle East having worked on projects in Abu Dhabi and Morocco over the years. However, we can now add Qatar to the countries where we work in the region, with one of our newest clients, the Qatar Museums Authority.

We’re working with them to help develop their new flagship National Museum in Doha, a Jean Nouvel-designed building inspired by the intricate petal-shaped sand formations of the desert rose. Due to open in 2015, this museum will capture Qatar’s culture and heritage in a series of impressive galleries, designed to appeal to both locals and tourists alike.

Take a look at what to expect here.

The spectacular 350 foot high cliffs in Bempton, East Yorkshire is home to one of the world’s most impressive seabird colonies… and Barker Langham this week.

We’re there to undertake some community engagement for the RSPB, as part of their Round 2 application to the Heritage Lottery Fund. We’re hoping to find out what activities and events people in the villages of Bempton and Buckton, as well as those slightly further afield in Bridlington and Filey, want to see take place at Bempton Cliffs in coming years.

We won’t be quite the spectacle of the 250,000 seabirds that flock there every spring and summer, creating an awesome sight. But we hope to do our bit…

If you would like to have your say about Bempton Cliffs, then do let us know.

Following on from our work with Manchester Archives+ advising them on their successful Round I HLF application, we are now working with them again for the next stage of the HLF process.

Over the next few months, we will be developing the business plan for the project, which aims to bring together Manchester’s most important archives under one roof. The revamped Manchester Central Library will be home to this significant collection, and locals and visitors alike will benefit from much greater access to the city’s heritage, as well as their own.

Take a peek inside the Library to look at the work that has been done so far.

Having worked with Archive+ at Manchester Central Library since the end of last year to advise them on their round 1 HLF bid, Barker Langham is delighted that they have today received initial support to develop a second round bid to the tune of £1.6 million.

The Archives+ project aims to bring together the largest and most important archives from different Manchester venues and re-house them in Manchester Central Library. Ten km of items, from 12th century parchments to 50,000 rare books, will be accessible via a new learning programme that will give people access to this important national collection. And exhibition spaces will provide new ways for more people to discover the archives, share their own stories and have a personalised experience of Manchester’s history.

Archive+ has received £72,500 in development funding from a £600,000 pot. Read about the other projects that have received recent funding here.

Barker Langham are delighted that the cultural sites of Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates have today been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Site list. The cultural sites include the limestone rocks of Jebel Hafit, the archaeological site of Hili, the site of Bida Bint Saud and the Oases Areas of the United Arab Emirates.

Our connection to Al Ain is via Al Jahili Fort – one of the UAE’s oldest landmarks and the largest of the many traditional mud-brick forts in the city. We developed the cultural vision for a recent restoration of the fort and helped present this philosophy in a temporary exhibition. We also curated the first permanent exhibition there of British explorer and photographer Wilfred Thesiger, who crossed the Empty Quarter Desert twice during the 1940s.

Barker Langham were delighted to attend the Welcome Back Celebration Preview of Bedwellty House and Park last weekend when this historic site opened to the public for the first time since its extensive restoration.

A former ironmasters residence in South Wales, we have been involved in this significant project since the initial HLF application for funding, and the subsequent development of the business, interpretation and audience development strategies.

2500 visitors were treated to a sneak preview of the restored Orchid House and a range of activities in the grounds such as rock climbing, a bouncy castle and a bull rodeo.

The house and park will be fully opened to the public later in June 2011.

Public voting for the semi-finals of the National Lottery Awards for ‘Best Heritage Project’ has now opened, and we are delighted that Sconce and Devon Park – a project that Barker Langham has been involved with for several years – has been short-listed.

The home of the best preserved sconce in the country, Sconce and Devon Park has been undergoing an extensive park-wide restoration project to improve its access, interpretation and to create a new visitor centre. We helped with the funding bids for the project, followed by developing the interpretation, some printed materials and a family heritage trail to help make the story of the park more accessible to a wider audience.

Voting opens today and you can cast your vote until midday on 20th June 2011. Cast your vote here.
